Nanoose Bay aquaculture company earns federal support
NANOOSE BAY - Maplestar Seafood of Nanoose Bay is one of four Island companies to earn federal government funds aimed at rewarding innovation in the aquaculture industry.
Maplestar received $31,000 this week to develop an off-bottom, suspended net project for culturing geoduck clams.
Fanny Bay Oysters of Union Bay received $63,000 to adopt technology to crush large volumes of oyster shells, to reduce waste and enable the shells to be used in innovative ways. The other two to receive federal funds through the Aquaculture Innovation and Market Access Program are the 'Namgin First Nation of Port McNeill and Pfizer Animal Health in Saanichton.
AIMAP is intended to support innovation and sustainability in the aquaculture industry across Canada.
