Cat rescue groups holding event
There could be as many as 100 cats and kittens in one feral cat colony in the Errington/Coombs area and the person looking after it is desperate for some help.
That help is being provided by Catspan and Qualicum Cat Rescue, two local organizations dedicated to spaying, neutering and looking after feral cat colonies in Oceanside. However, they, too, need some help — and that’s where the general public comes in.
“Catspan is having its annual book and garage sale on May 27, 28 and 29 at Wembley Mall,” said organizer Jennifer Coleman. “The funds are urgently needed for a large colony of feral cats and kittens, whose caretaker has come to Catspan and Qualicum Cat Rescue for help.”
Coleman said her group plans to deal with the unadoptable cats, while Qualicum Cat Rescue will attempt to find homes for the adoptable cats and numerous litters of kittens. This will include testing for diseases, treating cats that can recover and spaying or neutering all cats.
“The tame kittens will be adopted out and the neutered feral cats will be returned to the caretaker and Catspan will continue to monitor and help, where required,” she said.
In order to do that though, the two groups need money, something they hope to raise a fair bit of during their three-day sale. The event will feature DVDs, CDs and videos, as well as over 3,000 quality used books and numerous garage sale items.
“Last year, the money raised went towards the neutering of nearly 100 feral cats, but this large colony will require an extra infusion of money,” Coleman said.” Donations of money to help the cats will be very welcome.
Catspan also plans to hold a food drive during the event and Coleman is asking cat lovers to bring with them donations of dry or canned cat food.
“As an alternative, people can buy gift certificates at any pet food or grocery store and drop them off at the event,” she said.
The sale starts at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 10 a.m. on Sunday and will be inside the mall.
“There is another fundraiser happening at Wembley Mall on Saturday in the parking area,” she said. “They will be in the mall parking area, but we will be inside.”
