Nick Zoltay likes colour far too much to squander it in places where it should not be.

He believes that if colour does not have a necessary place in the composition of the photograph, then it should not be there.

The photographer is presenting Timeless Images; Enduring Art an exhibition of black and white photography at the McMillan Arts Centre (the MAC) from February 4 to March 1.

Zoltay received a Kodak Brownie camera for Christmas in the fifties.  He was only 10 years old and colour film was expensive, somewhat exotic, and did not produce the best pictures.  Black-and-white film, on the other hand, was affordable, so he honed his skills taking black-and-white photographs.

When colour film improved and Nick’s financial situation permitted him to use colour in his photographs, he realized that the use of colour was not necessary to create a beautiful photograph.  Colour could be used to enhance some photos but it was simply an element of composition and not the final product.

Stop by the MAC to view Zoltay’s work, located at 133 McMillan Street in Parksville.
