Try your hand at marimba music

Adults who would like to learn to play the marimbas will have the opportunity at a class in Errington starting Aug 11.

Sarah Van Borek taught marimba at the popular World Music Youth Summer Camp last year and she will return to teach that music and a traditional South African gum boot dance again to youth at the Errington Hall Aug. 11 through 15.  After a number of adults showed interest in learning the marimbas last year, Van Borek is also offering four one-hour sessions this year from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday that week, for $40.

Van Borek has been teaching South African marimba music on and off since 1999, incorporating a variety of other cultural elements into the mix. She has African Marimba teacher training accreditation from a school in South Africa called amaAmbush.

She also has a master of fine arts degree in film and TV production from the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and a bachelor of media arts degree from the Emily Carr University of Art + Design (Vancouver).  Van Borek currently teaches community projects and core media at Emily Carr.

Adults interested in the class can call Val Dare to register at 250-586-6583 or email her at vgdare@gmail.com.
