Residents have the opportunity to own an original oil painting by a local artist and the proceeds will benefit the North Island Wildlife Recovery Association (NIWRA).

French Creek artist Michael Schutte’s painting of Sandor the bald eagle, a resident at the centre with a damaged wing, is now being auctioned off.

“I like to do something positive with my paintings now and then,” said Schutte.

Schutte and his wife Els like visiting the centre in Errington and Michael said he often takes photos of Sandor, who is very photogenic. The painting also features an eagle totem pole from Duncan. Michael said, since Sandor will never fly again, he imagines that Sandor is praying to his totem brother that he may have that chance.

His painting of Sandor now hangs at the centre and people will be able to make a bid for the painting on NIWRA’s website (www.niwra.org).

Final bids for the painting will be taken at the Winterfest Craft Fair taking place at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre Nov. 21, 22, 23. Schutte also teaches art and music from his home studio in Parksville. For more on Schutte’s work visit www.michaelschutte.blogspot.ca.
