A local award-winning painter, author and poet is hosting an open house this Saturday which will feature his work and that of six other distinguished artists.

Joe Rosenblatt has written over 20 books and has received a number of major awards, including the Governor General's award for poetry in 1976, the B.C. Book Prize in 1986, and two years ago he was honoured with the Pandora's Collective Distinctive Body of Work Award.

His event this Saturday is called Art by the Beach and will feature some of his large acrylic paintings of cats and birds at play. Rosenblatt says he is “fanatically worshipful of cats” and has stated he considers dogs to be honorary cats. He will have a number of framed cat drawings in his Catnip Madness series at the event.

Also at the show, Dan Gray will be selling his pastel pieces, charcoal drawings and mobiles will be available by Marcie Katz and sculptures on-site by Bill Friesen. Painters Robert Kinnard, Don Jean-Louis and Lynn Orriss will also have work at the open house.

Art by the Beach takes place Aug. 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 221 Elizabeth Ave in Qualicum Beach, near the Qualicum Beach Inn.
