With boating season is almost here, it’s time to get ready and learn about being safe in the water.

The Nanoose Power & Sail Squadron (NPSS) is hosting Safe Boating Day on Saturday, May 11 at the Fairwinds Marina, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

The group is part of the Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons, an organization recognized as the foremost educational boating authority, delivering safe boating in Canada for more than 80 years.

The organizers indicated if you fish, paddle, power or sail, this is the time to make sure you have all the necessary safety gear and know-how for the start of the boating season.

During the event, the Nanoose and Nanaimo Power and Sail Squadrons will provide information on the many courses they are offering online and in person. As well, there will be boating equipment and safety gear for sale.

The Canadian Coast Guard vessel Cape Cockburn and Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue will offer vessel tours at the dock.

Other events include a marine-themed garage sale by the Schooner Cove Yacht Club and a presentation by a special guest speaker who will share first-hand experience of a near-sinking incident.
