Bluegrass with an old time feel is on tap as local group Backporch Banjo performs at the Bowser Legion Saturday, June 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The band features a fresh harmony-rich sound with Deep Bay fiddler Ted Granger and Qualicum Beach’s Linda Thorburn on banjo, as well as other locals Bob Slater on guitar, banjo and vocals, and Kazimea Sokil on mandolin, banjo and vocals.

The band’s repertoire ranges from hard-driving bluegrass to foot stomping old time with an occasional ballad and original song thrown in.

Last year at the first annual Lighthouse Bluegrass Festival Backporch Banjo shared the stage with Canada’s premiere bluegrass band, the Foggy Hogtown Boys from Toronto and the international bluegrass supergroup, Long Road Home featuring Pete Wernick aka Dr. Banjo, from Colorado.

This year the festival will take place on June 29, 30 and July 1 with camping, pancake breakfasts and three days of non-stop music.

Thorburn who plays a five-string Scruggs style banjo said the Bowser Legion gig is in preparation for the the upcoming festival which includes a Friday night dance at the Lighthouse Community Hall in Qualicum Bay with Sweet Ginger.

Admission to the dance is included with a Bluegrass Festival three day weekend pass which also includes camping.

Day passes and evening tickets are also available and can be purchased at the gate.
