Twins play jazz-folk-Celtic fusion
Two up-and-coming Victoria bands are making their way to Coombs this Friday to perform a show during their West Coast Christmas Tour.
Carli and Julie Kennedy and West My Friend will perform at the Soundgarden Dec. 7 at 8 p.m.
Carli and Julie are identical twins who grew up in a musical family in Powell River. The two started piano lessons when they were five and a few years later made a big decision.
“When we turned eight we decided it was time to have our own instruments,” Carli chuckled. “So I started on guitar and Julie started on violin.”
Today the sisters play a fusion of country, folk, jazz and Celtic music, and have performed over 15 venues in Nashville, Tennessee and represented Canada’s Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers as the SOCAN Artist of the Month on the Billy Block Show in February.
They have been nominated for five 2012 BC Country Music Awards, which Carli said is a real honour.
“To be nominated for five awards this year, that’s like over-the-top exciting for sure,” she said. “We’re really excited just to be nominated.”
Carli and Julie recently returned from Nashville, where they composed 15 new songs, and some of these will be featured at the show as well as original Christmas tunes and some old favourites.
The girls are teaming up with fellow University of Victoria music school graduates West My Friend for this tour. The group is made up of four talented, young musicians whose music has been described as upbeat, indie-folk, pop and roots.
The groups will play their own originals and some Christmas songs and then come together for the finale.
The show at the Soundgarden in Coombs is $20 available at Cranky Dog Music in Parksville.
They will also be playing Headliners in Nanaimo Dec. 15.
