Jon and Roy come to Errington
Victoria’s Jon and Roy are coming to Errington this Friday, to play one of their favourite venues while touring their new CD.
The duo and their group have played their laid-back folk and roots music (with many other influences) throughout the country, United States, England and Australia. But they enjoy playing around the Island the most, said Jon Middleton, who plays guitar and sings vocals in the group.
“Probably our favourite place to play is this area,” said Middleton. “There’s lots of cool venues around and Errington is an example of one of those venues, where it’s a unique setting and more community based.” Jon and Roy will play at the Errington Hall Friday, Dec. 7.
Middleton and percussionist Roy Vizer met around 2002 and started playing shows around the Victoria area. Since then multi-instrumentalist Dougal Bain Mclean and bassist Ryan Tonelli have joined them and the group has made appearances at many of the country’s big folk festivals like Winnipeg, Vancouver, Calgary, and Ottawa’s Bluesfest.
Their song Another Noon was featured in a Volkswagen TV commercial in the United States and Any Day Now was in a Scotiabank Canadian ad campaign.
Their newest album Let it Go came together a bit differently than their three previous albums, said Middleton, where the group focused on looking inwards rather than producing an album everyone would like.
“In this album we were just very relaxed, we’re all just comfortable in our own skin, and just made music as we wanted to make the album for no other reason than that,”
Since Let it Go was released in June of this year, the group has done some touring in Canada and the United States, but for the past month they’ve taken a break from traveling.
Middleton has been focusing on the release of a solo album, self-titled, which came out Dec.3 (yesterday).
At the Errington Hall Jon and Roy will play a mix of songs from previous albums as well as some from Let it Go.
Jon and Roy play the Errington Hall, Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20, $5 for youth and under 5 are free. Find them at the Errington Store, Cranky Dog Music in Parksville and Heaven on Earth in Qualicum Beach. For more on Jon and Roy visit www.jonandroy.ca.
