It’s time to shake the winter blues and start celebrating spring, and a local Rotary Club has created just the event for the occasion.

“It’s a time to visit with friends and neighbours, a time to really enjoy,” said chair of the Spring Ball Ron Stothers with the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise.

The Spring Ball happens Saturday, March 16 at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre.

This is the second year the club has held the event at the Civic Centre, expanding it last year to include an evening of dancing along with the usual three-course gourmet dinner prepared by Giovanni's Restorante.

The event was a sell-out hit last year, and Strothers said one of the most enjoyable evenings he and his wife had in awhile.

“My wife and I met on the dance floor on a boat many, many years ago, 50 to be exact, and our love was dancing. And we enjoyed that dance last year more than we have any dance in years.”

The sound system at the Civic Centre has been improved, Strothers said, and DJ Patrick Nicholson is great at playing music well-suited to the crowd. This year will have a fair number of up-tempo songs that will appeal to both the younger and older generations, he added.

Guests will enjoy a filet mignon dinner and a larger selection of wines will be available at the cash bar this year. There will be an array of both silent and live auction items, including a home-cooked dinner for 10 by chef Giovanni and a package for Kingfisher Oceanside Resort and Spa.

A limo service will provide a safe ride home from the semi-formal event. Tickets are $75 available from Close to You in Parksville, The Shoe Inn, Giovanni’s Ristorante and NR Insurance in Qualicum Beach. The evening begins with cocktails at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 6:30 and dancing around 9 p.m.

The event is a fundraiser for the Rotary Club and proceeds go toward supporting local community services.
