The first Qualicum Acoustic Cafe of the season features an award-winning indie roots chamber folk quartet from Victoria on October 4.

They’re called West my Friend and they have won Roots Album of the Year and Song of the Year at the Vancouver Island Music Awards.

The group plays an acoustic blend of instruments with four-part harmonies. All members were classically trained in the music program at the University of Victoria. The group released a four-song EP in 2011, and last year, their first full-length album called Place.

Currently, the group is trying to fundraise to record a new album, and people can visit their campaign on Indiegogo before Oct. 10 to donate. In return, people will receive things like signed CDs, the new album on vinyl, WMF baked goods, and private concerts. Visit their website for the link as well as music samples and more information: www.westmyfriend.com.

The Qualicum Acoustic Cafe happens on the first Friday of every month at the Rotary House, located at 211 Fern Rd West, at the corner of Beach Rd. The first half of the show is open mic, and following intermission, the feature act. Tickets are $5 available from the Vintage Candy Shop in Qualicum Beach, and youth are free. Seating is limited.

Those interested in playing open mic contact John Beaton at jabeaton@gmail.com or Dave Barta at dbarta@shaw.ca.
