Watch ballroom as a sport

A fundraiser raising money for dance scholarships for youth will take place April 25 at the Lighthouse Community Hall from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

The event, hosted by Forever Yung Dance Studio in Parksville, will feature young competitors who will be participating in the Island Fantasy Ball in Nanaimo on May 3-4.

Admission is by donation to a scholarship fund known as DanceSport.

Every year Forever Yung gives out over $2,000 in youth scholarships.

DanceSport used to be referred to as competitive ballroom dancing but has been renamed to suit its modern image as a demanding sport.

It consist of physical strength, agility, coordination, stamina, high level of fitness, discipline, teamwork, grace, style and musical interpretation. DanceSport provides opportunity for developing athletic discipline.

The April 25 event is a dress rehearsal for local competitors offering them an opportunity to dance in front of an audience. Both amateur couples and pro-am ladies will be competing.

The dress rehearsal runs 6:30-7:45 p.m. and then a social dance for everyone will commence until 9 p.m. Refreshments will be available and people can bring finger foods to share.

Prizes will be raffled to raise money for the DanceSport scholarship.
