Vintage and Retro

The fifth annual Vintage-Retro Inspired Faire takes place Sunday, May 7 from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The event takes place at the Qualicum Beach Community Hall at 644 Memorial Ave.

The event, created by Mirella Trozzo, features a mix of vintage clothing, jewelry, furniture and more.

Admission is by donation, with some of the proceeds going towards Manna Homeless Society.

Gardens from afar

The Qualicum Beach Garden Club has a meeting Wednesday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre.

The event includes a meet and greet, coffee and cookies, door prizes and more. Speaker Roger Griffiths will discuss visiting the Channel Islands and the Netherlands Keukenhof Gardens.

All are welcome, though cost of entry for guests is $3.

Art in the family

The opening reception for the new MAC exhibition showing three generations of the Heine family takes place Saturday, May 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The exhibition, entitled HEINE: Canadian Legacy Exhibit: 150 Years of Art in one B.C. Family, is to mark Canada’s 150th year. The Heine family of B.C. will present a combined total of 150 years worth of proffessional art.

Heine family work has appeared on Canadian coins, stamps, books, magazines, newspapers and elsewhere.

Creating work from original watercolour to oil paintings that hang in collections around the world, the Heines have been a part of the Canadian art scene for more than 60 years.

Drum for fitness, fun

The Arrowsmith Community Recreation Association has drummer Monica Hofer back to put on two programs: Drums Alive and African Hand Drumming.The first combines dance, aerobic exercise and drumming into body/mind workout. Participants work out to their comfort level, poounding with drumsticks on fitness balls, while grooving to music. No drumming experience is required, and all equipment is supplied.

Classes are offered at KickStart Fitness at 1530 Springhill Rd. from May 8 to June 19. Cost is $65 and it runs from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The second class is suited to people with some drumming experience, where participants will work on djembes and duns (African bass drums). The program is offered at Errington War Memorial Hall, from May 8 to June 19, from 5:15 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. Cost is $75. Djembe drums are available for rent.
