Flutist Stephanie Bell and pianist Irene Setiawan will be performing at The Old Schoolhouse Arts Centre’s Music on Sunday on March 26.

The Sunday concert is scheduled for 2:30-4:30 p.m. at TOSH (122 W. Fern Rd., Qualicum Beach). Admission is $18.

The program will include works by Bach, Telemann, Poulenc, Griffes and Schubert.

Stephanie Bell is a Vancouver-based flutist who recently completed her masters of music at the University of Southern California (USC), studying with former principal flutist James Walker. She earned her bachelor of music in flute performance and music scholarship at the University of British Columbia with Brenda Fedoruk, principal flute of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.

Bell has performed with the Vancouver Symphony, the Kamloops Symphony, the National Academy Orchestra, Orchestre de la Francophonie, the Orford Academy Orchestra and the Debut Orchestra and American Youth Symphony in Los Angeles. She also has an affinity for contemporary music, and has been a member of the UBC Contemporary Players ensemble and USC Thornton School of Music’s EDGE ensemble, as well as performing various solo and chamber works. While studying in LA, she was a resident guest artist with both the Young Musicians’ Foundation and LA Phil Young Composer programs.

As well as performing, Bell has a commitment to her community. She participated as a teacher in the El-Sistema affiliated Orkidstra program in Ottawa, assisting founder and music director Tina Fedeski. She also set up a music program in Accra, Ghana during her time volunteering with the Osu Children’s Library Fund in 2009. While residing in Los Angeles, Stephanie was a substitute flute teacher with the Esparanza Azteca children’s music program.

While studying at USC, Stephanie pursued further piccolo studies with Sarah Jackson, piccolo in the Los Angeles Philharmonic. She has performed in master classes with respected performers including Emmanuel Pahud and William Bennett and studied at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts with Carol Wincenc and Tara O’Connor.

Irene Setiawan is currently a doctor of musical arts candidate in piano performance at UBC. Her previous studies, performances, and experiences have shaped her as a solo and collaborative performer and music educator.

Several years after learning piano, Irene also learned composition and performed her own compositions in several concerts in Indonesia as a member of Yamaha’s Junior Original Concert. After studying with dedicated Indonesian pedagogues So Kim Wie and Sienny Debora, she performed more actively.

Setiawan’s achievements include winning top prizes at Sydney Performing Arts Challenge in 2001, Pelita Harapan University National Piano Competition in 2004 and First Runner up of UBC Concerto Competition in 2013. Besides performing as a solo pianist, Setiawan has also actively performed with other instrumentalists, UBC choirs, and UBC Wind Ensemble. Recently she was chosen to perform Mendelssohn’s Trio in D minor with UBC President Santa Ono for his Installation’s Celebration Concert. She holds a bachelor of music in piano performance from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at National University of Singapore. Then she taught piano in Singapore for a year and came to UBC to study.
