I want to thank you for your front-page picture (PQB News, May 9) showing Marion Baker hatchery volunteer Dale Ksyniuk putting chum fry into French Creek.

The many volunteers that work at this and many other hatcheries deserve a well-earned pat on the back. It’s hard work and with little government support, these guys and gals are busy helping to “growing our own” salmon stocks.

There are many issues in play with respect to what to blame when we are faced with a depleting salmon resource and those issues are not my reason for writing.

People like Kyle Mckenzie are spending valuable personal time to organize the “Spring Reeling Salmon Derby” slated for July 20-21 with 100 per cent of proceeds to the aforementioned hatchery.

Thanks also to the many local businesses that are donating prizes to help make Kyle’s vision a success. These people are making a difference. If you have an opportunity to get out and enjoy a day on the water on those dates, buy a ticket at the French Creek store and know that you are contributing to a great cause.
