Thanks to the RDN directors Veenhof, Stanhope, Fell and Oates for their ‘no’ votes for the recent automated garbage collection motion.

I didn’t see any questions by the board with respect to the suggestions made by Mr. Gardner of Waste Connections Canada, that this new system will improve worker safety… how many injuries are there in our region?

Secondly, really? Improve the neighbourhood aesthetics? Does this mean that when we put out our garbage we can all have matching cans? No questions by the board about who buys and supplies and what will happen when there is a need to replace these cans? Will they still be the same? Will they actually fit on my side of the road?

Now getting down to the cost, I have been very pleased that in the past our board members prided themselves on keeping the costs down… now we’re going on the roller coaster. Up goes the price, buy a new set of cans… oops the system has changed time to buy a different set of cans and on and on. None of which reduces garbage.

It works quite well for everyone who wishes to deal with yard waste to take it to the transfer station and pay your fee. As a careful consumer I already subsidize those who continue to ignore the real problem of consuming and throwing away.

It seems that I am often writing to remind those in government that we the public do not have unlimited resources to provide those who come up with non cost saving ideas that quite simply reflect a wish list..

Automated garbage is not the answer we the public are looking for. The solution of garbage needs to be addressed thru public consultation, with directors present, not some online survey that few people knew about or replied to.
