Letter: Stay sealed in safe spaces

In response to Al Skiber’s recent attack on those of us who heat our homes with woodstoves.

In response to Al Skiber’s recent attack on those of us who heat our homes with woodstoves.

Wood has provided a sustainable, renewable, low-cost and effective means of heat for millions of people on this continent for countless generations. The majority of us that do, responsibly burn dry, clean wood safe in the knowledge that this expression of personal responsibility and freedom keeps our families warm, even when “on grid” power or gas supplies are interrupted. Case in point - the recent natural gas explosion in Prince George and the subsequent radio adverts compelling people to use LESS natural gas this winter.

If there is a very small minority of people whose health is compromised by the few of us that make the personal and individual decision to burn wood on our own private property, maybe they ought to keep themselves in sealed safe spaces where other, more harmful pollutants such as vehicle exhaust and pulp mill emissions cannot harm them.
