Youth teach seniors music skills
An intergenerational music program that gives seniors the chance to come together in a welcoming space, just wrapped up in Coombs, but another will start up in the new year.
It’s a seniors marimba class, and besides making friends, seniors gain the confidence to play an instrument while interacting with youth.
Instructors Rob Dearin and Sarah Chezick are both members of the youth marimba group Kumbana Marimba and Arrowsmith Activity Coordinator Kim Longmuir said they did an exceptional job of leading the seniors.
“I think the intergenerational component of this program is valuable in the community, where youth are teaching seniors. So much mutual respect grows from this opportunity.”
Longmuir said she would like to run another beginners seniors marimba class in mid-January if there is enough interest. No musical experience is necessary and it has great social and cognitive benefits and is affordable, Longmuir said.
