RCMP: PQB resident defrauded out of $10K in cryptocurrency scam

The online scams continue in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area.

On April 9, a resident was reportedly defrauded out of $10,000 after responding to correspondence from a supposed online vendor, saying their account was compromised and that they should transfer money in cryptocurrency because their account was frozen.

Three days later, another resident reported being scammed out of $200, after responding to an online social media platform ad offering a kitchen appliance.

The incidents were among 247 complaints received by Oceanside RCMP the week of April 8 to April 14.

Some of the other incidents included:

On April 8, building materials were reported stolen in the area of Wembley Road and Island Highway 19A in Parksville, on April 8. The same day, a group of trespassers was reported in the 300 block of Morison Avenue and two boxes of delivery medications were reported stolen from a delivery vehicle in the city.

On April 9, a resident reported someone dropped money at a local store and turned the funds into police along with a licence plate number on. The person was notified and was very grateful. A day earlier, a fanny pack and contents were found at the French Creek Marina. Contact Oceanside RCMP during regular business hours to claim quoting File No. 2024-3044. The same day, a key ring containing a Ram truck key fob and other items was found in the area of Craig Street and Despard Avenue in Parksville, on April 9. Contact police quoting File No. 2024-3104 to claim. On April 12, a Milwaukee battery operated circular saw with markings was found on Rath Road in Parksville, on April 12. Call police, quoting File No. 2024-3181 to claim.

On April 10, the new public washrooms were again reportedly vandalized, with mirrors scratched and outdoor foot showers damaged in the Parksville Community Park.

On April 13, three dumpster divers were reported in the early hours in the 200 block of Island Highway East in Parksville. The same day, a vehicle was reported vandalized, with a window broken and personal effects stolen in the Rathtrevor Park parking lot, Parksville. Police said a male suspect has been identified.
