The Parksville Community Centre Society has been seeking some financial assistance to help cover the cost related to their pop-up depot location in Parksville.

The non-profit group applied for the Regional District of Nanaimo Zero Waste Recycling Funding for 2024 but was rejected as their operation is supported and already funded by Recycle BC. To help the PCCS secure money for their operation, the RDN board last December directed staff to provide a report of potential funding options for them to tap into.

Staff conducted research and shared a list with the PCCS earlier about where they can apply to for funding. This list was scheduled to be presented to the Solid Waste Management Committee but their meeting on April 16 was cancelled.

The PCCS was advised to inform RDN staff on the grants they plan to apply for in order for the regional district to provide added advocacy in support of the centre receiving the funding.

The PCCS provided residents in District 69 a place to dispose of items not included in the curbside recycling list. They started the pop-up depot in 2023 and have again agreed to host it in 2024.

The service has been welcomed by residents, since it saves them from travelling to other recycling depots in Nanaimo and the Comox Valley.

The events are held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1080 Industrial Way in Parksville. The following materials are accepted free of charge: flexible plastic packaging; white and coloured foam packaging; glass packaging; and paper packaging and cardboard.

The following are dates for the pop-up events this year:

May 11, May 25, June 15, June 29, July 13, July 27, Aug. 10, Aug. 24, Sept. 7, Sept. 21, Oct. 5, Oct. 19, Nov. 2, Nov. 16, Nov. 30 and Dec. 14.
