Win or lose, Mayne will run

Whether he wins or loses the Liberal leadership race, former Parksville mayor Ed Mayne says he fully intends to run for a seat in the legislature.

Current Parksville-Qualicum MLA Ron Cantelon isn’t worried, however.

Mayne said he wouldn’t even have considered running for the leadership if he wasn’t also willing to seek a seat.

“I’m committed to that,” he said. “It bothers me when somebody says they want to be the leader but they are not sure if they are going to run in the next election of they lose.”

Mayne said he has talked to Cantelon about his intentions and said he promised not to vie for the Parksville-Qualicum seat if Cantelon decides to run again.

“I told Ron right up front I wouldn’t run against him,” Mayne said. “If Ron wants to run for another term in 2013 I would look to see if there was anything else available.”

Cantelon meanwhile said he welcomes the thought of Mayne contesting a seat.

“There are plenty of seats currently held by the NDP,” he said. “I look forward to Ed going after any one of them.”
