Working with a net
As the Nile Creek Enhancement Society continues its negotiations with the Deep Bay water purveyor over supply issues, volunteers kept up the job of raising their brood.
This week, NCES volunteers and fisheries officials changed out the mesh netting at Deep Bay Marina, which retains some 250,000 pink salmon fry.
Past-president of NCES Ken Kirkby, said the work is done once a week to ensure enough oxygen gets to the fry, to aid in their maturation.
The effort is part of the entire salmon life cycle undertaken by the Nile Creek fish hatchery, operated by NCES.
The group is making a documentary about the life cycle, to use, added Kirkby, in it promotional material and lobbying efforts.
