Trail snow removal request denied
In the event of a major snowstorm in Qualicum Beach next winter, town staff will have their hands too full to deal with clearing walking trails.
That message was made clear when council rejected a proposal from the parks and recreation commission to include the Dollymount and Rupert Road trails in the priority snow removal list.
Councillor Jack Wilson, the head of the commission, moved the recommendation for discussion, but it was clear he had little enthusiasm for its passage.
Staff were also unimpressed, noting the high level of maintenance needed to keep the trails safely open, along with the fact both staff and contractor resources are fully concentrated on town roads as why they urged rejection of the proposal.
“I can see the staff’s position,” Wilson said. “During a heavy snowstorm there are other priorities on their mind than the Dollymount and Rupert Road trails. I don’t feel strongly for this motion.”
