Canada Day: Qualicum Beach

CDQBladiesWEB.jpg

Qualicum Beach celebrated Canada Day in traditional, low-key style with a small gathering at the local branch of the Royal Canadian Legion Friday afternoon.

“We really want to celebrate our youth through the air cadets, navy league and sea cadets, through the schools and particularly our high school students,” said mayor Teunis Westbroek.

“We want to ensure youth are always able to graduate from a local high school,” he said.

He gave one of just a few very short, casual speeches to the crowd of a couple dozen, followed by a performance by the Arrowsmith Pipe Band and entertainment by Tomas and Rowena, known as The Nostalgics.

Westbroek said they were also celebrating the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge being in the country for Canada Day, though he urged William to follow in his grandmother’s footsteps and visit Qualicum Beach.

The event was put on by the Qualicum Beach Legion and involved a lot of work by the Ladies Auxiliary and a lot of volunteers, organizer’s pointed out.
