Twelve million steps forward

Forward House in Parksville had a great annual summer barbecue last Friday where they introduced a unique plan to have people walk across the country.

The society, which provides mental health and addictions recovery services, is looking for people to sponsor participants in the “virtual walk across the country in 80 days,” explained executive director Carol Richardson.

People will wear pedometers donated by Pharmasave, which will measure their daily progress around town as they try to cover the equivalent of the 7,314 km journey from Vancouver to St. John’s, Newfoundland. That’s estimated as an ambitious 12 million steps.

People are invited to join the walk and/or pledge a participant and watch the progress over the next couple months, finishing on Thanksgiving (October 10).

Along with raising money and awareness the program is actually good exercise for those involved, Richardson said.

Richardson said the barbecue was a big success, with great weather, raising almost $1,000 toward improving their arts studio and supporting their programs on physical wellness and awareness of mental health issues.

They are also continuing to invite the public to stop by and take part in their “community canvas” project with a canvas available to the public.

They are observing the variables such as how many stop to look, versus actually painting, and the difference by age, gender and group size.

Stop at the house at 129 E. Jensen Ave., across from city hall, or call 250-954-0785 for more information or to sponsor a walker.
