City of Parksville director of operations Alan Metcalf explained, further to a photo in The News on Tuesday, that they are expanding the beach volleyball courts in Community Park with the sand from Beachfest.

He said special sand is brought in for the Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition & Exhibition, which the city then hauls away.

This year they decided to keep the sand for a long-planned expansion of the sand courts, since they sometimes don’t have enough room for all the courts they need for tournaments.
