Young students growing in District 69
Although the amount of overall students in School District 69 is down slightly from last year, assistant superintendent Rollie Koop was excited about a trend.
“I’m excited about next year because next year will be the first time in many, many years that we’ll actually see growth in our elementary programs,” he said.
It takes some time for that trend to wash through the system, he said, but by 2019, the district should see the downward trend of student numbers reversed at the middle school level followed by the secondary schools in 15 years’ time.
This year there will be an estimated 4,249 students in the district compared to 4,342 last year.
This downward trend has been echoed around the province which will see an estimated 534,691 full time public school students this year, compared to 540,696 last year, meaning 6,005 fewer students. Since the 2000/2001 school year there has been a decrease of more than 63,000 students provincewide.
