Community awards deadline is Feb. 1

The City of Parksville will again sponsor the 2013 Glassie award for Citizen of the Year.

The 12th annual community awards, sponsored by the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce, will be presented at a gala ceremony March 1 at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre.

Everyone is encouraged to nominate individuals, groups and businesses, from which "an independent nominations review panel" selects the recipient, said chamber executive director Kim Burden.

Burden stressed that the awards are a community wide event, open to everyone, the chamber is only a sponsor.

The awards honour "outstanding contributions to our community in the areas of volunteerism, entrepreneurship, leadership, community mindedness and customer service," according to the chamber's request for support.

While councillor Al Greir argued against the financial support last year, he seconded the motion this year and there was no council discussion. The commitment will cost the city $350.

In previous years, other councillors have said they like the Glassie's focus on hard-working community members and volunteers.

For more information and to nominate check under the "Sponsored events" tab at www.parksvillechamber.com, or for more information call 250-248-3613 or e-mail info@parksvillechamber.com. The deadline for nominations is February 1.
