Qualicum Beach wins national award

The Town of Qualicum Beach has won a national award for its neighbourhood development.

Mayor Teunis Westbroek was in Windsor, Ont. Wednesday to receive a Federation of Canadian Municipalities' (FCM) Sustainable Communities Award. The town won the award for its plans regarding the village neighbourhood, trails, waterfront master plan, electric vehicle charging stations and its youth and family retention/attraction strategy.

"This award demonstrates that Qualicum Beach is a recognized leader in community planning, thanks to the great feedback we receive from residents," Westbroek said via e-mail Wednesday afternoon. "I would like to acknowledge the great work in developing the town's Sustainability Plan, which is really the culmination of decades of stewardship by councils, residents and staff in protecting the character and feel of our community."

According to the FCM, the awards recognize innovation and excellence in municipal sustainable development across Canada in six categories: brownfields, energy, neighbourhood development, transportation, waste and water. "The communities we celebrate tonight completely debunk the idea that environmental sustainability and economic development are mutually exclusive," said the FCM's Raymond Louie.
