Three sent to hospital after crash near Parksville

Police say three people were taken to hospital early Sunday morning when their vehicle left the highway and ended up in a forested area near Parksville.

At 3 a.m. Sunday, RCMP from Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services and Oceanside, together with B.C. Ambulance Service and volunteer firefighters attended reports of a serious single vehicle collision on Highway 19 just north of the Englishman River Bridge.

Police say the three female occupants of the vehicle had left the road to the right and entered the forested area.

The vehicle, a 2007 Mazda 3, was destroyed by the collision and firefighters had to extricate two passengers from the severely damaged vehicle. All three occupants were taken to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital by ambulance.

RCMP say the driver, a 33-year-old Nanaimo woman, together with her passengers, a 29-year-old woman from Nanaimo and a 25-year-old from Qualicum Beach, had serious and significant, but non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP say the investigation continues and  speed and alcohol have not been ruled out as contributing factors.
