The NEWS a finalist for top honours in newspaper competition

The Parksville Qualicum Beach News has once again made the final and will be going for a repeat gold performance in the Olympics of B.C. newspapers, The Ma Murray Awards.

On Friday, the B.C. Yukon Community Newspaper Association (BCYNA) announced the finalists for this year's Ma Murray Awards, which will be handed out at the River Rock Hotel in Richmond on April 26.

The NEWS is one of three finalists in the coveted General Excellence category for its circulation category (28,000-50,000), along with two Black Press sister papers, The Campbell River Mirror and The Cowichan News Leader Pictorial.

"General Excellence is reflective of the fact that publishing a newspaper is a team effort, from the smallest classified ad to the front-page story," said Peter McCully, publisher of The NEWS. "There are lots of pieces to the puzzle. The NEWS has a great team."

The NEWS was awarded the gold medal in this category in 2012, silver in 2011 and gold in 2010.  The BCYCNA is a non-profit membership organization representing community newspapers throughout British Columbia and the Yukon. It boasts a membership of 126 newspapers, with a combined readership of 2,012,196.  — NEWS Staff
