Mailboxes pried open in Nanoose Bay
Police are warning residents to be aware after two Canada Post mailboxes were found "pried and broken open" in the Nanoose Bay area April 14.
"It happens more often than people think," said RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman. "Thieves have been known to target mailboxes in search of personal information, identification, cheques and money."
Foreman said the general pubic can protect themselves from mail theft by checking their mail as often as possible and being on the lookout for suspicious people in and around mailboxes. If you have any information regarding these thefts, please call the Oceanside RCMP at 250 248 6111 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1 800 222 8477. RCMP are also warning residents that tax season comes with a surge in fraudulent tax-related scams. A news release issued April 15 said three residents reported fraudulent e-mail or phone calls within the past week from somebody claiming to be from the Canadian Revenue agency (CRA). RCMP are reminding residents the CRA will not request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by e-mail. — NEWS Staff
