Fatal accident in Nanoose Bay

An accident on the highway in Nanoose Bay Sunday morning killed a motorcycle rider.

Oceanside RCMP report that a 33-year-old man from the Lower Mainland, travelling southbound around 9 a.m., lost control in the Nanoose Flats area and was found deceased at the scene.

Cst. Doug Pennington of the Central Island Traffic Services told CHEK News the man hit the concrete median and the only witness was the man’s girlfriend, who was driving behind him in an SUV and was too shaken up to give details.

The pair was returning from Campbell River where the man had just purchased the bike.

Oceanside Cst. Monika Terragni said in a news release that his name is being held pending family notification. Weather and visibility were good and Central Island Traffic Services and the B.C. Coroners Service are continuing to investigate.

With the southbound lanes closed, traffic was reduced to an alternating single lane for an extended period, with drivers reporting waits of up to two and a half hours and traffic being slowed for as long as six hours while police investigated the scene.

Pennington said it was a good reminder to always drive carefully.
