Members of the Parksville Beach Festival Society demonstrated some unique singing skills to create some excitement for the 2014 Quality Foods Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Competition and Exhibition.

Led by their president Cheryl Dill, the festival team wore silly hats and sang a song at the June 12 dinner meeting of the Parksville Chamber of Commerce.

Summer Sounds of the Island is the title of the hallmark event featuring amazing displays of sand sculpting art and architecture.

Singing Put a Sandy Mixture In to the music of the song Put Another Nickel In, the enthusiastic performers generated some laughs and some buzz for the five week long beach festival which will host 29 world class sand sculptors.

Music is the theme of the 2014 event running from July 12 to August 17 and musical acts will perform on the picnic shelter stage each Friday and Saturday night for the summer concert series which kicks off July 18.

The beach festival is one of the longest-running B.C. summer festivals and each year there is something new and exciting.

This year it is a singing competition called Parksville Idol.

The contest sponsored by the The NEWS and the City of Parksville is for solo amateur singers who live on Vancouver Island.

It has three divisions; Kids: ages 6-12, Youth: ages 13-18 and Adult: 19 plus.

The competition will include a People's Choice online voting format to determine the semi-finalists in each age division to perform live on August 9, as well as a finals round where the top two in each category will perform just prior to the fireworks on August 9.

Online entry forms will be available from July 1to 21, 2014 at www.parksvillebeachfest.ca.
