Coombs teen dies in hospital after being struck by vehicle

A 17-year-old Coombs boy died in Victoria General Hospital after being struck on his skateboard by a pick-up truck at the 2100 block of Alberni Highway July 30, Oceanside RCMP confirmed Saturday morning.

"His death resulted from injuries sustained after being struck," stated a news release issued by police.

Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said Mounties were called to the scene at approximately 10.15 p.m. Wednesday, the night of the accident.

Foreman said both the skateboarder and vehicle were traveling eastbound at the time of the collision.

"He (the driver) couldn't avoid hitting the boy," said Foreman, who added it is not clear if the skateboarder was wearing a helmet.

He said the boy was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital and sustained "serious" injuries from the accident.

Foreman said the driver of the pick-up truck is a Qualicum Beach man and speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision.

RCMP say they have yet to speak with all the potential witnesses, including a man driving a blue Chevy truck who stopped to assist the victim. If you were a witness, or have any further information, police are requesting you contact Cst. Shawn Parker of the Central Vancouver Island Traffic Services at 250-248-6111.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
