RDN offering $600 incentives related to septic systems

Beginning on Sept. 15, the Regional District of Nanaimo says it will offer up to $600 per household to help residents maintain their septic systems.

"I have had a septic system for 72 years, so I know the importance of regular system maintenance," said RDN Chair Joe Stanhope.

"These new rebates will complement the RDN's SepticSmart program by helping residents keep up with the work that their systems require."

SepticSmart is a web-and-workshop-based program that shares care and maintenance tips — tips the RDN says can maximize a septic system's lifespan and translate to huge cost savings.

Now, the RDN says it is making it easier for residents to take care of septic maintenance by offering rebates.

The RDN says it will rebate 75 per cent of eligible maintenance costs, to a maximum of $200 per category:

• Category 1: Custom Maintenance Plan.

• Category 2: Effluent Filter Installation.

• Category 3: Riser Installation.

To qualify for the rebate, eligible maintenance must be performed on an existing septic system in the RDN (new systems are not eligible).

Qualifying work must be performed between Sept. 15 and Dec. 31 by an authorized person under the Sewerage System Regulation.

For more information on the Septic Maintenance Rebate Program and a complete list of eligibility and requirements, go to www.SepticSmart.ca or call Wastewater Services at 250-390-6560 or 250-954-3792.
