A Qualicum Beach man who had an apparent change of heart after calling 911 barricaded himself in a residence before being arrested nearly four hours later, Oceanside RCMP reported Monday.

An RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) was called to the scene when the man failed to respond to orders from police.

The incident began shortly after 7:30 a.m. Monday (April 24), when police responded to a residence on Grandrose Road in Qualicum Beach to check on the well-being of an occupant after receiving a dropped 911 call.

Upon police attendance, it was discovered that the lone occupant of the home, a 41-year-old Qualicum Beach man, had an outstanding arrest warrant, RCMP reported in a written release.

The suspect male refused to exit the home and would not comply with police demands. Out of concern for police and public safety, the RCMP Emergency Response Team and a negotiator were called to attend.

After a lengthy negotiation, the man was arrested without incident at 11:15 a.m. He is now in RCMP custody.
