Pedestrian critically injured after being struck by vehicle on Highway 19A

Vehicle involved in crash has been seized for forensic analysis

A 48-year old Parksville man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 19A on the evening of Nov. 29.

An Oceanside RCMP officer on patrol discovered a seriously injured pedestrian laying on the south side of Highway 19A near Plummer Road in Parksville at approximately 8 p.m., according to a news release by RCMP.

“It appeared the pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle, however there were no vehicles at the scene,” the release read. “Paramedics attended and rushed the pedestrian to hospital with critical injuries.”

Shortly after the pedestrian was located, police received a call from a driver who reported they believed they may have struck a person in the area of Highway 19A and Plummer Road. The vehicle involved in the crash has been seized for forensic analysis and the driver is cooperating with the investigation, according to the release.

Although road and weather conditions at the time were dark and snowy, the investigation into the definitive cause of the crash has not yet been established, said Sgt. Shane Worth.

The investigation is continuing with the assistance of an RCMP collision reconstructionist.

If anyone witnessed the crash or has dash cam footage depicting a male walking on the highway in this area at approximately 8 p.m. on Tuesday evening, please contact the Oceanside RCMP and quote file #2022-11749.

Oceanside RCMP responded to seven motor vehicle crashes on Nov. 29 and the morning of Nov. 30, with two reportedly being snow-related.

A single-vehicle rollover on Rupert Road in Qualicum Beach at approximately 5 p.m. resulted in minor injuries to the driver.

A pedestrian was also struck by a vehicle in Nanoose Bay in the afternoon of Nov. 29, resulting in minor, non-life threatening injuries. This crash not was not weather-related, Worth said.
