Regional District of Nanaimo sees building permit numbers fall in first quarter

Value of construction activity in RDN more than $25 million

Building activity in the first quarter in Regional District of Nanaimo got off to a slow start.

In the first three months of 2021, the RDN issued 141 building permits, down compared to the past three years — 203 in 2020, 181 in 2019 and 163 in 2018. It consisted of 134 residential and seven commercial developments.

In District 69, Electoral Area H (Bowser, Qualicum Bay, Deep Bay) had the lowest number of building permits issued with 11, down from 23 last year.

In other regions compared to the previous year, Electoral Area E (Nanoose Bay) was down a point from 23 to 22; Electoral Area F (Coombs, Hilliers, Errington, Whiskey Creek, Meadowood) decreased to 17 from 26; and Area G (French Creek, San Pareil, Little Qualicum, Englishman River) declined to 20 from 34.

The value of this year’s first-quarter construction activity in the entire regional district is more than $25 million.

Staff indicated the construction value of permits issued can fluctuate based on the type and scope of the projects.
