Allan Douglas Eden

September 25, 1948 - January 25, 2017

Allan Douglas Eden passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at Trillium Hospice on January 25th, 2017, at the age of 68 years.  Al (Unc) is lovingly remembered by his best friend and life partner Maureen LaFleche, daughter Tauna Eden (Scott Hauptman), sister Colleen Howe (Gary), brothers Art Eden  (Rae) and Garth Eden (Faye). He leaves behind many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and numerous caring friends who will miss him deeply.

Al moved from Edmonton to Qualicum Bay in the late 80s. For more than 2 decades, he contracted to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans to assess the number and distribution of salmon stocks returning to spawn in select streams on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Al’s last few days were spent with grace and dignity and he was an inspiration to all who had visited him. In the end, Al may have lost his battle to cancer… but he won the respect and admiration of his family and friends who witnessed his bravery and sense of humor in the face of overwhelming odds.

We remember the quick-witted kind man we loved so much, with his smiling blue eyes and gentle spirit. Al was strongly connected to nature and loved the outdoors – on any given day he could be found golfing, swimming in the rivers or simply enjoying the beauty of our Island’s ocean shores.  Al loved reading and music, Tai-Chi and horse racing; his interests were diverse and he made lifelong friends through these activities. He was a treasured companion to Maureen who shares his appreciation of nature, and together they spent many evenings and weekends walking their favourite beaches and exploring the beauty of their cherished Island.

We would like to thank Dr. Robyn Love, Dr. Marlene van der Weyde, Dr. Robert Waite, nurses; Tamara, Vi, Pat, Keith, Gwen, Kristin, Colleen, Crystal and all support staff at both the Nanaimo Palliative Unit and Trillium Hospice for their wonderful and compassionate care.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 4th, 2017 at the Lighthouse Community Centre in Qualicum Bay, BC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to
