BAUMGART, Amanda
98 years, of Parksville, BC, died peacefully
at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital
January 16, 2005, after a brief illness.
Born August 25, 1906, in Poland, she came to Canada in 1929. In
December of that year she married G. Albert Baumgart in Edmonton,
Alberta. They lived in Edmonton until they moved to the Duncan area in
1937. Until the mid-1960’s they farmed their Cowichan Valley property
and maintained a prize-winning dairy herd. Mr. Baumgart died in 1977.
Mrs. Baumgart remained on the family farm until 1998 when she moved to
Little Mountain Seniors Facility in Parksville.
An avid gardener and master of several crafts, including knitting,
spinning and sewing, she was also a founding member of Trinity Lutheran
Church in Duncan. Together with her husband, she helped to organize the
Cowichan Holstein 4-H Club.
She is survived by her daughter Alice and husband W. Wesley McDonald of
Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, her son-in-law R. David Grant of Qualicum
Beach, her grandson Lyle and wife Meredith Grant of Seattle, her
granddaughter Lesley Grant of Vancouver, and her twin
great-grandchildren, Sam and Ellie Grant of Seattle, as well as nieces
and nephews in Canada and Germany. She was preceded in death by her
daughter Rita Grant, her brother Heinrich Drachenberg and sister
Ottilie Neubauer in Germany, two sons, a step-sister, and step-brothers.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 29, at 2:30 p.m. at
Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 795 West Island Highway, Parksville, V9P
1B9, followed by a reception for family and friends in the Church Hall.
