Dazy Drake

August 8, 1945 -February 14, 2017

It is with great sadness that I announce my Mom, Dazy Drake (Dianne Kay Drake), passed away suddenly on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2017 at her winter home in Melaque, Mexico. She was surrounded by loving friends at her passing. Valentine’s Day was fitting as she always signed her name “Passionately Dazy”.

Dazy was born in Detroit, Michigan and was predeceased by her Mother, Olive Brennan Gilman and her Father, William (Gus) Brennan. She is survived by her daughter Lisa Mackay (Jim Millicheap), granddaughter Rumer Mackay-Meloche (Kye Peladeau), sister Sharon Angelocci (Al), niece Kristy Terech (John), niece Mara Ostrander (Mike), three great nephews and two great nieces.

Dazy graduated from Trenton High School and kept in touch with many of her high school friends her whole fife. After graduating from high school, she attended University Of Detroit Dental School and graduated as a Dental Assistant. Her first job was with Crest Toothpaste. She traveled the world; to Europe, India, Iran, Turkey where she met my Dad and where I was conceived. They made a pit stop in New Zealand where I was born and spent six months on my Grandparents farm. From there they moved back to Michigan and eventually settled in San Francisco. My Mom and Dad, Roger Mackay, loved the Haight Ashbury vibe of the 70’s. From there she remarried and moved to Marin County and eventually made her way to Lasqueti Island. She loved and embraced the freedom and independent lifestyle on Lasqueti and made many lifelong friends. On Lasqueti she ran a very successful Bakery, “Ducks Bakery, Pizza, and Bagel Factory” for ten years and then turned it into a BNB, also very successful. In time she felt “the strip” on Lasqueti was getting too busy and made a move to the quieter south end of Lasqueti Island where she built her forever home. There she created a gathering place for her friends from all corners of the world to come and visit, eat, drink, weave baskets, sauna, swim, play botchy ball, play music and laugh. She volunteered tirelessly (well sometimes she got tired) for Lasqueti Community Projects. Dazy had strong passionate views on world, national, and local politics. She demonstrated, wrote letters, and if needed would lay down in front of bulldozers to make her voice heard. There was never a question about how Dazy felt about issues because she always told it like she saw it.

My Mom was creative, artistic, and loved to share her gifts with everyone. She was a very patient teacher, amazing cook, and gardener. She was a strong, generous, caring, loyal, fiery, funny passionate Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Auntie, and Friend. She will be sorely missed.

There will be a celebration of life April 15th on Lasqueti Island at

her house on Squitty Bay. For those who want to come from off

island, there will be a shuttle service to and from the ferry.
