Doris Audrey (nee Clarke) Murray

MURRAY, Doris Audrey (nee Clarke) February 3, 1917 - April 9, 2004 Doris Audrey Clarke Murray of Parksville, BC and formerly of Springhill, NS, went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Good Friday, April 9, 2004. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 87 at her residence in Halliday House, Parksville, BC. She was born in Centerville, New Brunswick on February 3, 1917, the only child of the late Randolph James Clarke and his wife Gaylon Rosilee London. Audrey's mother passed away when she was a young girl and her father later remarried Margaret Henderson of Saint John, New Brunswick. Audrey received her early education in Centerville, NB. Her family later moved to Amherst, Nova Scotia and then to Springhill where she completed high school. Upon finishing her grade 11 she continued her studies at the Nova Scotia Normal School in Truro, NS. She taught school in several one room country schools as well as in Springhill, Nova Scotia before moving to Toronto, where she lived and taught for a number of years before returning to Springhill to become the wife of Herbert Douglas Murray and step-mother to his daughter, Ruth, in 1957. Audrey was predeceased by her mother, step-mother and father, as well as her husband, Herb. She is survived by her daughter Ruth and son-in-law John Duerksen of Ladysmith, BC, her granddaughter Katherine and husband Zach Abass of Azusa, CA, sisters-in-law Lillian (Don) McCully and Emma Murray of Springhill, NS, brother-in-law Stewart Ross of Vancouver, BC, cousins Ralph Clarke and Alice Sloan of Toronto, ON, and numerous nieces and nephews. After her marriage Audrey taught school in Amherst, NS before moving to Parksville, BC with her husband and daughter in 1963. She taught school in the Horne Lake and French Creek schools of School District #69. She suffered a life changing stroke in 1978 at the age of 61, survived cancer in 1987 and upon the death of her husband she moved to Halliday House in March 1993 where she lived happily and contented until her death. The family is very thankful for the kind, gentle and loving care given to Audrey during her eleven years of residence there. She was baptized in Centerville United Baptist Church when she was twelve years old and was a member of Walma Road Baptist Church during her years in Toronto. Upon her marriage on January 23, 1957 she moved her membership to St. Andrew's United Church in Springhill to be with her husband. When she and Herb moved to Parksville they were members of Knox United and later Arbutus Grove Church. She spent much of her life involved in Christian work. In recent years she enjoyed watching on her TV and supporting the various Christian ministries she loved. A service for the Celebration of Life was held on Friday, April 16, 2004 while the west coast family was gathered in Azusa, CA, officiated by her nephew, Dr. Hugh Ross.
