SMYTH, Ethel Christina

May 30, 1921 to July 4, 2004

Predeceased by her first husband Robert Brookman in 1950, second husband Reg Smyth in 1984 and sister Mildred in 1933. Ethel is survived by her family who loved her: daughter Donna (Wayne) Foster of Richmond; grandsons Bob (Marci) Foster of New Westminster and Steven Foster of Richmond; sister Evelyn (Gordon) Milgate of Calgary; sister-in-law Max Brookman of Calgary; and sister-in-law Rosemary (Howard) Nyren of Brentwood Bay; and ten nieces and nephews. Ethel was born and raised in Oyen, Alberta. She later moved to Calgary to pursue a career in business training. As a young widow with a two and a half year old daughter, she moved to Qualicum Beach and bought a small store and began a new life. She owned and operated "Ethel's" (formerly the Tot-N-Teen) shop for 38 years and was a dedicated promoter of Qualicum and shopping at home. She married Reg Smyth in 1957 and the two of them lived busy active lives, each with their own business to run and participating in community activities. After retirement Ethel continued to be busy in the community doing volunteer work, golfing, curling, etc. She also travelled a great deal while she was able. The family would like to thank all the staff at Berwick, Trillium and Eagle Park Care Facilities for the loving care they have given mom and grandma these last three difficult years. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Stephen's United Church, 150 Village Way, Qualicum Beach on Friday, July 9, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ethel's memory to the research for the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in care of Pacific Parkinson's Research Institute UBC at 2221 Westbrook Mall, Vancouver, BC V6T 2B5.
