KERR, Florence Emmaline (Garrett)
November 26, 1916 to September 6, 2006
After a brief illness, in the Delta Hospital, Ladner, BC, in her 89th year, 4 months after Joseph, her husband of 66 years. Florence is mourned by children Robert (Dale), Josephine, Geoffrey, Stephanie (Alexander), 7 grandchildren , 4 great-grandchildren and countless friends. Predeceased by brothers Fred, Jim and grandson Garrett.
Born in Brockville Ontario, Florence spent part of her childhood in Brooklyn, New York where her mother was a professor at Pratt Institute. Her formative years were spent in Sackville, New Brunswick on the campus of Mount Allison University, where her mother also taught, while Florence studied Home Economics. Upon graduation, she worked at Toronto Western Hospital as a dietician. Just prior to this Florence and Joseph, who had just received his Engineering degree, were married in the Mount Allison University Chapel on May 23, 1940.
Florence and Joseph raised 4 children, while travelling extensively. Having begun married life in Sudbury, Ontario, they then moved to Duparquet, Quebec, Johannesburg, South Africa, Niagara Falls, New York, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto, Kingston, Jamaica and Qualicum Beach, BC. During those years Florence worked at the Johannesburg General Hospital, The Niagara Falls, N.Y. Social Services Dept. and as a substitute teacher in Winnipeg, while always being involved with volunteer organizations such as the Rotary Anns, University of Women’s Club, Engineers’ Wives and numerous artistic clubs.
Florence and Joseph retired in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, where they were cherished and active members of their community for 26 years. In 2004 they moved to Tsawwassen, BC to be closer to family.
Their wishes were that they be cremated and interred together. A memorial service for Florence and Joseph will be held Saturday, November 18, 2 p.m. at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Qualicum Beach, BC, 138 Hoylake Road West, V9K lK3. (250) 752-5414.
