Frank Donald Starz

November 22, 1931 – August 17, 2017

Frank Donald Starz, aged 85, died peacefully in his Qualicum Beach home on August 17th, 2017.

Frank was born on Nov 22nd, 1931 to Frank and Phyliss (Samson) Starz in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. He left home at the age of 16 to join the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. He earned several medals, including the Silver Star, the United States 3rd highest medal.

On Nov 18, 1950, Frank was the Sgt. of B Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Calvary Division, in the Naktong river area of Korea. In response to calls for help from a wounded fellow soldier, Sgt. Starz crawled approx. 200 yards to reach the wounded soldier and carried him back to his own lines while enemy fire was being concentrated on him, thereby saving a comrades life. For his heroism he earned The Silver Star.

Frank married his Queen, the love of his life, Kaye Barlow, on Dec 18th, 1965 in San Francisco and as a devoted and caring father raised two children, Curt and Melanie. Frank was an avid drummer and frequently played in jazz bands in the San Francisco area for many years. He loved the beach and would frequently take his family camping to the Half Moon Bay area in San Francisco.

Frank graduated from Western Washington State College with a Bachelors in Education and Political Science. Shortly thereafter, he started teaching in Byron, California, where he became an inspirational and much loved teacher for over twenty years. Throughout his life, he was never afraid of an adventure.

Frank and Kaye retired to Qualicum Beach in 2003 where he lived a happy life near the beach.

Frank is survived by his wife, Kaye Barlow, two children, Curt and Melanie, three grandchildren, Crystal Starz, Chase and Maykala Camacho, one Great Grandchild Olivia Smith, and his brother Robert Starz.
