SMITH, Howard Alexander M.B., B.Ch., FRCS(Edin.), FRCSC; born in Belfast, Ireland on February 13, 1916; died peacefully at home on March 15, 2004, age 88. Dr. Smith graduated from Cambridge University, England in pre-med and in 1941 from Queens University, Belfast with his medical degree; served in the Royal Navy in WWII as physician; immigrated to Canada in 1952 as general surgeon to the United Church hospital in Lamont, Alberta; obtained his urology degree from U.B.C.; practiced medicine for forty-nine years, most of that time at Lions Gate Hospital as an Urologist. He was an ardent sailer, skier, and golfer and on retirement to Parksville in 1990 he took up community service including seniors peer counseling, hospice, and the men’s club at church. Predeceased by his first wife Bobbi; sadly missed by his wife of thirty-five years Earla and his children Tony (Georgia), Andrew (Trish), Carole; step-children Charlotte (Louis), and Kathryn (Cam) and his six grandchildren; Amara (Kirk), Alan, Melanie, Paul, Shula, and Kalman. A Memorial Service will be held for family and friends at Knox United Church, Parksville on Wednesday, March 31 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to your favourite charity in memory of Howard.
