Jacobus Sybren (Ko) STIGTER

July 13, 1927 - January 25, 2017

It is with great sadness that we announce Ko’s peaceful passing at age 89. Predeceased by beloved son, Gary. Ko is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Wyn; daughter, Linda (Glenn), son, Chris (Amy), daughter-in-law, Linda; six grandchildren, Ashley, Kathleen (David), James, Riley, Jack and Dayton.

Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Ko immigrated to Canada in 1952. He was a veteran of the Dutch Army (Indonesia, New Guinea, Singapore), serving four years overseas. Ko met Wyn while traveling through Europe after the war ended and they married two years later.

Wyn and Ko arrived in Canada with $27 dollars in their pockets and settled in Port Alberni, BC before moving the family to North Vancouver where they remained until their retirement. He loved hiking, camping, reading, carpentry, history and traveling the world with his family. Ko spent every winter in Mexico with Wyn, taking long walks on the beach and becoming fluent in Spanish. He spoke nine languages.

Ko will be deeply missed by friends in Parksville and North Vancouver; family in Vancouver and Los Angeles; sister, Marianne, and many cousins, nieces and nephews in the Netherlands. He will also be remembered for his many stories, sense of humour, family barbecues, and his love of puzzles.

Our family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care provided by his homecare aides and the nurses and doctors at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

A Celebration of Ko’s Life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, February 11th in the Allsbrook Room at Yates Memorial Services, 1000 Allsbrook Rd, Parksville, B.C. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Ko’s memory with a donation to Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation, 1200 Dufferin Crescent, Nanaimo, BC V9S 2B7.
