Maria Joaquina de Medeiros Botelho

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Maria Joaquina de Medeiros Botelho on April 9th, 2017.

A long time resident of Qualicum Beach, Maria was born in Sao Miguel, Azores on November 19, 1928. A woman of faith, in March 1959, together with her 5 young children, Maria emigrated to Canada to join her husband, John, who had moved 22 months earlier. They settled in Qualicum Beach and later welcomed two more baby boys into their family.

Maria was predeceased by John, her husband of 62 years in 2009, daughter Tina (2011), son Luis (2007) and two infant sons in 1957 and 1961.

She is survived by her children Dolores (Joe), Daniel (Debbie), Mary (Rob), Toni (Beverly), Jack, son-in-law Michael, as well as 17 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Having been raised in a large household, Maria acquired many skills that would later prove to be indispensable as she provided for her husband and 7 children. She was truly a master chef, never using a recipe, creating nutritious and delicious meals using whatever was in season. From her homemade breads, cheeses, sausages and the occasional sweets for celebrations there was always wonderful aromas emanating from the kitchen. As time permitted she took up knitting for her many grandchildren as well as fishing with her husband, but the one thing she truly enjoyed most was visiting with her many family members and friends. She will be fondly remembered in our hearts.

A Catholic Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 on May 10th, 2017

at the Church of the Ascension, 887 Wembley Rd. Parksville,

followed by a tea at the church hall and interment at the

Qualicum Beach Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to
